๐๐ 1. Federal Democracy Dialogue Difficult Without Dismantling the Military Dictatorship, Says NUG Foreign Minister
May 26
The National Unity Government (NUG) Foreign Minister, Daw Zin Mar Aung, has stated in an interview with a media outlet that discussions about federal democracy are unlikely to be practicable unless the military dictatorship system is first dismantled.
“Even during this revolutionary period, our revolutionary forces have developed the habit and practice of freely and broadly engaging in discussions about federalism and democracy. That, in itself, is a strength and an achievement of the revolution,” said the minister.
“I see this as part of the openness brought about by the revolution. Therefore, going forward, it will be difficult to implement these dialogues in a practical way unless the military dictatorship system is removed. The most critical matter right now is to remove the military dictatorship and replace it with a federal system,” she emphasized.
Meanwhile, the violent military council continues to exert pressure on ethnic revolutionary organizations, including through airstrikes, while powerful neighboring nations are also applying pressure for ceasefire negotiations.

๐๐ 2. Unilateral Pressure from a Neighboring Country in the North Undermines Genuine Peace and Stability
May 26
At a press briefing program titled Public and International Communications (Press Briefing) – 11/2025, Presidential Office Spokesperson U Kyaw Zaw stated that unilateral pressure from a neighboring country in the north will not contribute to genuine peace and long-term stability.
“Pursuing sustainable solutions for the country through the unity and collaboration of our revolutionary forces aligns with the ‘Myanmar-owned, Myanmar-led’ approach that ASEAN has consistently advocated.
Coercing ceasefires through pressure and forced negotiations will not help achieve long-term conflict resolution. The unilateral interventions currently taking place in the north, pushed by a neighboring country, cannot support genuine peace and stability,” he said.
It is understood that China has exerted pressure on revolutionary forces in Myanmar and facilitated negotiations with the military junta, hosting dialogue meetings in the city of Kunming, China.

๐๐ 3. Over 200 Political Prisoners Confined and Denied Medical Treatment in Magway Prison
May 27
According to a statement from the Political Prisoners Network – Myanmar (PPNM), more than 200 political prisoners have been confined under lockdown in Magway Prison and are being denied access to medical care.
This follows a clash on April 13, 2025, outside Magway Prison between local People’s Defense Forces (PDFs) and military council troops. Inside the prison, tension escalated between inmates and staff, and prison officers reportedly opened fire from guard towers and prison rooftops.
As a result, at least two political prisoners—including Saw Shwe Aung, who was in the prison’s Dhamma Hall—were killed.
In the aftermath, prison authorities accused the political prisoners of involvement in the incident, rounded up more than 400 of them, forced them to lie face-down in the open, and subjected them to brutal beatings. Many suffered injuries to their backs, legs, hips, and were also wounded by gunfire.
Among them, political detainees including U Win Win and Ko Phyo—who were arrested on trumped-up charges—were severely beaten and are now in critical condition. However, prison authorities not only carried out the assaults but are also denying them access to medical treatment.
It is reported that more than 200 political prisoners have now been held in lockdown for over a month under this accusation. All family visits have been suspended, and even the right to send and receive prison letters has been revoked for those allegedly involved in the incident.
Since the time of the incident, political prisoners in Magway Prison have had no access to clean drinking water and are being forced to buy water at inflated prices. They have also had to bathe using only toilet water from inside their cells.

๐๐ 4. ASEAN Member States Failing to Halt the Myanmar Military’s Atrocities
May 26
Justice For Myanmar has revealed that ASEAN member states are failing in their responsibility to halt the violent atrocities committed by Myanmar’s military junta.
In a newly released report, Justice For Myanmar states that companies operating within ASEAN countries are actively assisting Myanmar’s junta in committing international crimes by supplying it with fuel.
Despite more than four years since the military attempted to seize power, companies based in Southeast Asia continue to engage in business with the junta. These companies have not only provided critical sources of revenue but have also supported the junta by supplying communications technology and aviation fuel.
ASEAN member states have not only failed to act to halt the junta’s violent atrocities, but also allowed companies operating within their jurisdictions to provide financial and military support to the junta—at a time when it continues to commit international crimes with total impunity.
Justice For Myanmar further noted that ASEAN-based companies have provided economic support to the junta through business dealings with its major military conglomerates—Myanmar Economic Corporation (MEC) and Myanmar Economic Holdings Limited (MEHL)—as well as through land lease payments for land controlled by the junta’s Quartermaster General’s Office, which generate tax revenue for the regime.
Justice For Myanmar has called for an immediate halt to all financial, military, technological, and aviation fuel support provided to the junta by companies in the ASEAN region. It further urged ASEAN governments to take action to prevent continued corporate complicity in these abuses.
