Radio NUG

Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun, Myanmar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, stated that people living with HIV in Myanmar are facing extreme difficulties in accessing antiretroviral medication, injections, and healthcare services.

He made the statement during the UN General Assembly’s Multi-Stakeholder Hearing on the Implementation of the Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS and the Political Declaration on HIV/AIDS.

“Myanmar’s healthcare system has remained fragmented, and people living with HIV are struggling intensely to access medications, injections, and necessary healthcare services. Since the unlawful military coup, the Myanmar people have been suffering severe developmental, financial, economic, and social decline—conditions further exacerbated by the devastating earthquakes that struck in March this year,” the Ambassador said.

He further emphasized the need to stop the military from misusing humanitarian aid and medical support as tools of war, stating, “To end HIV/AIDS as a public health threat in Myanmar, the military junta must cease weaponizing humanitarian assistance and medical supplies. Likewise, as the military dictatorship and its illegitimate coup are the root causes of Myanmar’s current crisis, the junta and its unlawful seizure of power must be fully and permanently brought to an end.”

Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun also noted that the National Unity Government’s Ministry of Health, in collaboration with ethnic revolutionary organizations and relevant stakeholders, has been actively working on HIV/AIDS prevention efforts in Myanmar, including conducting public awareness campaigns.

📌📌 3. UN Reports: Only 8% of the Required $1.14 Billion in Humanitarian Aid for Myanmar in 2025 Has Been Received; Earthquake Relief Also Severely Underfunded

June 17
Radio NUG

Despite ongoing challenges, the United Nations has reported that as of early May, less than 8% of the $1.14 billion required for Myanmar’s 2025 humanitarian response plan has been funded. For earthquake emergency assistance, only 16% of the requested funding has been secured, according to UN Myanmar.

The UN added:
“As flooding begins to affect some regions of Myanmar, UN agencies and their partners continue to deliver critical aid to earthquake-affected communities. In Rakhine, displaced persons are receiving emergency shelter and life-saving supplies. In Sagaing, over 2,500 schools have been destroyed, leaving thousands of children, including 12-year-old Nan Nay—who dreams of becoming a doctor—living in temporary shelters without access to education. Meanwhile, families in Mandalay’s open fields face a lack of clean water and sanitation during the monsoon season, and the limited healthcare access raises concerns over the spread of disease.”

The UN further highlighted that only 50% of the funding necessary for Myanmar’s prioritized annual humanitarian, life-saving, and resilience-building services remains available. Without both urgent and sustained support, millions of highly vulnerable people will not receive the aid they need.

📌📌 4. Military Restricts Police Arrests in Yangon Region

June 17
Radio NUG

According to a June 15 directive reported by Myanmar Now, security-related arrests carried out by the police force in military-administered areas of Yangon Region are now subject to prior notification and approval from the military.

The directive was reportedly relayed to township police chiefs and relevant police officers through the Yangon Region-based Regional Military Command, via officers including tactical commanders, battalion commanders, and operation commanders.

As per the document, before conducting any arrest, police officers or township police chiefs are required to inform the local military battalion or tactical command in advance.

It further stipulates that if any arrest is carried out without prior coordination, the military is to temporarily detain the responsible police officers and immediately notify the Regional Military Command.

Additionally, the directive prohibits security personnel from demanding bribes at inspection checkpoints, city entry and exit gates, and roadblocks.

The issuance of this directive is believed to be a response to the military’s disapproval of recent police raids targeting online gambling operations in Yangon’s Latha Township and cockfighting and illegal betting dens in Hmawbi Township. Following these incidents, it is reported that the Yangon Regional Military Commander lashed out at local military units.

It was also noted that certain nightclubs and KTV lounges in Yangon—such as Arena and A4—are operated by former military officers, and the military has been actively preventing drug-related arrests at these establishments.

There are reportedly 10 battalions under the Yangon Region Regional Military Command, with a combined estimated force of around 1,000 troops. According to Lieutenant Colonel Zin Yaw, a participant in the anti-coup resistance, this force was formed after the 2021 coup to maintain rear-area security in Yangon, as frontline units such as Light Infantry Division 11 and Military Security Affairs (Sa Ka Kha) Unit 4 had been redeployed to active combat zones.
