Radio NUG

Between June 14 and 24, troops of the military junta stationed in Kanyonekyun Village, Launglon Township, Dawei District, committed repeated sexual assaults against a 70-year-old woman, according to a statement released by the Nhin Si Yaung Women’s Association.

When junta troops advanced into the area and occupied the village, most residents fled. However, the elderly woman stayed behind to care for her ailing husband and because of her own advanced age. It was during this time that she was sexually assaulted multiple times.

A junta soldier, estimated to be over 40 years old, raped her five times over two consecutive days, reportedly in the presence of her husband.

As a result of this brutal and degrading crime, the elderly woman is suffering both physically and psychologically and is in urgent need of specialized care and support.

In addition, the same military column arrested about 100 local residents from villages along their route and Kanyonekyun Village, killed one man, burned down two homes and two motorbikes, and looted over a hundred civilian homes, according to the DDMSC.

The man who was killed was identified as U Myo Zaw Aung (aka U Myo Kyann Aung), a 46-year-old resident of Kanyonekyun Village who was reportedly suffering from mental illness. He was beheaded, and his body was later found dumped in an oil palm forest between Sappyae Village and Launglon Town as the troops retreated.
