While close-range clashes were ongoing in Hpakant, Kachin State, between junta troops and the joint forces of Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and Kachin People’s Defense Force (KPDF), a junta fighter jet mistakenly bombed its own ground troops and also opened fire using machine guns, according to People Spring.

The incident occurred around 11:40 AM on July 15, near the monastery compound of Mawmaunglyan village, where junta aircraft conducted an airstrike. Reports indicate that the bombing mistakenly hit their own side.

Eyewitnesses stated that in addition to dropping bombs, the aircraft strafed the area three times with machine gun fire.

The junta is reportedly launching an offensive in the area to regain control of Mawmaung Hill and Lamaung Hill, which are considered strategically vital in the Hpakant theater. In response, KIA and KPDF are launching interception assaults from Mawmaunglyan, Mawwanlay, and A Phote Phon villages.

Heavy junta casualties were reported during the ground fighting, and it was also confirmed that on July 13 at 5:35 PM, junta aircraft had previously bombed A Phote Phon and Mawmaung Hill areas.

A reinforcement column from the junta heading toward Nat Ein Taung camp in Yebyu Township, Tanintharyi Region, along the Thai–Myanmar border, was ambushed, resulting in the deaths of four junta soldiers, including the unit commander, according to a statement from the KNU Myeik–Tavoy District.

On July 14 and 15, joint forces comprising KNLA Brigade 4, Brigade 6, and Special Task Force 2 ambushed the advancing junta column composed of five battalions from Kalein Aung Military Region.

During the engagement, Major Aung Ko Hein, the commander of one of the units, was among those killed. Four junta soldiers were captured alive, and various weapons and ammunition were seized.

One of the captured soldiers was reportedly wounded during the battle, and junta troops illegally recovered his weapon and abandoned him at the battlefield with injuries.

The wounded soldier was quoted saying to remaining junta members:

“They [the junta] don’t value our lives. I experienced it firsthand. Don’t expect them to come back for you if you're injured—they won’t evacuate or treat you. They'll leave you behind like they did to me. The best choice is to defect to the revolutionary forces and the people’s side whenever the opportunity arises.”

The wounded soldier was later carried for miles by KNLA and allied troops, who provided medical care in accordance with humanitarian principles and the laws of armed conflict, and is currently under their custody, receiving treatment.

July 15
Radio NUG

In the Ann–Padaung battle zone of Rakhine State, two soldiers from the terrorist junta army—Nay Lin Aung (ID No. PS/134981) and Aung Thet Htun (ID No. PS/127146)—defected to the Arakan Army (AA) on July 9, according to a video statement released by the AA.

In their testimony, they revealed that the military conscription law is being used by the junta to forcibly recruit young people across the country, who are then sent to frontlines and compelled to participate in military operations against their will.

The statement also noted that junta forces are suffering defeats nationwide, losing numerous bases, and facing increasing rates of defection and desertion. Many soldiers are demoralized due to harsh treatment and oppression by their commanding officers.

In the video, the two defectors described forced labor, coercion, and abuse within the military. They explained that those who had been forcibly conscripted, like themselves, had no desire to fight and would defect to ethnic resistance groups whenever given the chance.

The Arakan Army affirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of those who defect, and encouraged any junta soldiers who wish to escape to reach out to nearby AA-controlled areas at any time.

๐Ÿšฉ๐Ÿšฉ 8. Two New Conscripts Defect from Frontline in Naungcho Township

July 15
Radio NUG

On June 10, two conscripted troops from Batch 10 who had been deployed to a frontline outpost near Tain Pin Hlae Gyi in Naungcho Township deserted their positions and defected to the Kyaukme District Special Operations Force, according to official reports.

They stated that their defection was prompted by rampant drug use within the army, training sessions that encouraged looting of civilian property, and orders that sanctioned sexual violence against civilians—practices they could no longer tolerate.

Although they had initially brought weapons with them, the two explained that they had to abandon them in the forest due to the difficulty of the journey.

The Kyaukme District Special Operations Force has provided them with support and shelter, and is currently arranging for them to reconnect with their families, according to the statement.
