๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 1. Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun: Women, girls, and youth increasingly vulnerable to trafficking due to displacement and hardship in Myanmar

July 1
New York City — United Nations Headquarters

Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun stated that the majority of the population in Myanmar is fleeing internally, and women, girls, and youth are becoming increasingly vulnerable to human trafficking due to exploitation risks.

He made the remarks during a preparatory consultation held with relevant stakeholders and independent experts ahead of the United Nations Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons High-Level Meeting.

The Ambassador explained that Myanmar has become one of the major hotspots in Southeast Asia for human trafficking, cross-border smuggling, and online scams. With worsening economic conditions, widespread displacement, and lack of access to essential services, more and more families are falling into extreme poverty. As a result, a large portion of the population is fleeing from their homes, and especially women, young girls, and youth are becoming highly susceptible to trafficking.

He further emphasized that under the current brutal military regime, it is impossible to effectively implement the United Nations Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons. Only a legitimately elected civilian government — which has both the support of the people and international legitimacy — is capable of fully and faithfully carrying out such a noble and vital responsibility.

๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 2. U Nay Phone Latt: The military junta has no authority to organize any election

July 1

During the National Unity Government’s (NUG) Press Briefing for the People and the International Community, U Nay Phone Latt, spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, declared:

“The military group attempting to unlawfully seize people’s power has no authority to hold any election.”

He noted that the military junta is intensifying efforts to conduct an illegal and sham election that violates the will of the people. According to available information, the political parties registering to compete in the planned election are those that — even if their votes from the 2020 general election were combined — failed to secure even ten percent of the seats in the Union Parliament. These are parties that do not enjoy public support.

Meanwhile, political parties with genuine public backing are being systematically suppressed, and the junta is trying to stage a fraudulent election with parties lacking popular support. He reiterated the NUG’s stance:

“A military group that is trying to unlawfully seize the people’s power has no authority to conduct elections.”

U Nay Phone Latt further affirmed that the 2020 election results remain legally valid, and the elected legislative and executive branches that stemmed from those results are still legitimate and intact.
