๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 1. CRPH Chairperson U Aung Kyi Nyunt Addresses IPU Parliamentary Forum on Junta's Ongoing Violence and Human Rights Violations; Meets with UN and Malaysian Permanent Representatives on Myanmar Crisis

On July 22, a Myanmar parliamentary delegation led by U Aung Kyi Nyunt, Chairperson of the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH), attended the United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in New York City, USA, held under the theme "Gender equality and health: fast forwarding progress", organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

During the forum, the Myanmar delegation addressed the severe degradation of Myanmar’s healthcare system following the military coup, explaining that widespread poverty has driven the public into both physical and mental health crises, while displaced civilians continue to lack shelter, food, clean drinking water, and medicine. The delegation urged the international community to expand humanitarian support for the people of Myanmar.

They further highlighted that prior to the coup, female representation in Myanmar’s parliament stood at 15%, and that women have been actively involved in leadership roles within the National Unity Government (NUG) and the CRPH, particularly in shaping inclusive policies. They emphasized that gender equality remains a core objective in building a future federal democratic Myanmar.

The delegation also denounced the military’s prolonged campaign of gender-based violence, both physically and digitally, against women—including sexual violence in detention, and the lack of adequate medical care for imprisoned women. These grave human rights abuses were specifically discussed at the forum.

CRPH Chairperson U Aung Kyi Nyunt was joined by:

  • Daw Myat Thet Thun (Chair, International Relations Committee),
  • Daw Mya Mya Aye, and
  • Daw Phyu Phyu Lwin
    as representatives in the forum.

Following the forum, U Aung Kyi Nyunt held bilateral discussions with:

  • H.E. Mr. Ahmed Faisal Muhamad, Permanent Representative of Malaysia to the UN, and
  • U Kyaw Moe Tun, Permanent Representative of Myanmar to the UN.

These meetings focused on:

  • the current political and humanitarian crisis in Myanmar,
  • ASEAN’s ongoing mediation efforts,
  • Malaysia’s role as the current ASEAN Chair in the Myanmar process,
  • the military junta’s sham elections, and
  • the junta’s continued acts of violence and terror.

U Aung Kyi Nyunt expressed gratitude to Malaysia for its active engagement on Myanmar issues and urged continued solidarity with the people of Myanmar.

Daw Phyu Phyu Lwin and Daw Mya Mya Aye, both CRPH members, also participated in these meetings.

๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 3. ASEAN Continues to Shield the Violent Military Junta, Says Defend Myanmar Democracy

Defend Myanmar Democracy has declared that ASEAN must end its ongoing legitimization and protection of Myanmar’s military junta, urging the regional bloc to stand with the people of Myanmar and the pro-democracy movement, rather than supporting uniformed murderers.

“It has been 28 years since ASEAN welcomed Myanmar’s military regime into its regional framework, claiming that its strategy of 'constructive engagement' would pave the way for reforms. Instead, ASEAN granted the military international legitimacy, strengthened their grip on power, and ultimately exposed the people of Myanmar to decades of violence and repression. Even today, with blood still staining the country, ASEAN continues to shield the very perpetrators it once legitimized,” the statement read.
