๐๐ 3. Political Prisoner Ko Aung Naing Soe Dies from Beatings by Hpa-an Prison Staff; Authorities Falsely Claim Death Was Due to Heart Disease
July 25
The Myanmar Political Prisoners Network (PPNM) announced today, July 25, that political prisoner Ko Aung Naing Soe died from brutal beatings by staff at Hpa-an Prison, although prison authorities falsely reported his cause of death as heart disease.
Ko Aung Naing Soe, also known as "Kayin Lay," was serving a seven-year sentence under Section 505(a) of the Penal Code. According to the statement, he died after being severely beaten by around 30 prison staff.
He was reportedly left behind in a ward for elderly or general prisoners instead of being moved to another facility along with other political prisoners, during a routine transfer at the prison.
On July 21, during cell lockdown time, he was allegedly accused of getting involved in a verbal exchange and was subsequently taken outside by roughly 30 prison staff and violently beaten, leading to his death.
PPNM stated that in recent months, repression of political prisoners in Hpa-an Prison has intensified. For example, during headcounts, any slight movement such as a nod could result in being singled out and beaten—clear violations of human rights.
PPNM's statement also included the names and registration numbers of the prison staff involved in the fatal assault. Among the perpetrators confirmed were Chief Officers Kyaw Khine and Thwin Htoo, Deputy Warden Soe Thu Ya Thein, Officers Ko Ko Phyo and Chit Oo Zaw, and Chief Warden Win Maung. The organization pledged to continue investigating and identifying the remaining perpetrators.
As a result, PPNM is urging revolutionary forces in the relevant regions to take note of the names and registration numbers of those involved in the killing of Ko Aung Naing Soe and to cooperate with the appropriate judicial and legal institutions to ensure justice is served.
