πŸ“ŒπŸ“Œ 1. Ko Htein Lin says that the presence of General Aung San’s brother’s grandson at the Martyrs’ Day ceremony should not become a political stage for those who do not genuinely honor the martyrs

Ko Htein Lin stated on July 27 via his social media page that the attendance of U Yae Aung Than and his wife—U Aung Than’s grandson and granddaughter-in-law—at the Martyrs’ Day ceremony should not become a political performance staged by those who do not genuinely value or honor the martyrs.

“For those unaware,” he wrote, “this family has neither preserved the legacy of General Aung San nor maintained any meaningful closeness with my mother, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. Uncle U Aung San Oo has, in fact, acted in ways that are deeply hurtful and disgraceful toward his own sister. His behavior has been publicly known and openly disrespectful. Their actions have never aligned with the steadfast principles and values upheld by both my grandfather and my mother.

When my mother was being unjustly detained, it was disturbing to witness them present themselves at the revered Martyrs’ Mausoleum—built in honor of the martyrs—pretending to be the guardians of my grandfather’s legacy.

The Martyrs’ Mausoleum is a sacred memorial to honor the martyrs. It should not become a political stage for those who lack genuine respect for the martyrs.”

In 2025, U Yae Aung Than and his wife attended the Martyrs’ Day ceremony on behalf of U Aung San Oo and were also seen greeting military leader Min Aung Hlaing, as reported by junta-controlled media.

U Yae Aung Than had also represented U Aung San Oo at the 2021 Martyrs’ Day ceremony. Similarly, in 2018, he attended on his behalf and laid a commemorative wreath, which was covered in Myanma Alin newspaper with accompanying photographs.

U Aung Than, the elder brother of General Aung San, previously served as a BBC staff member under British rule. He resigned from civil service in 1945 and entered politics, joining the Socialist Party. In 1956, he was arrested under Section 5 and subsequently sent to Coco Island Penal Colony, according to records.

Among his children, U Cho Aung Than and Daw Nge Ma Ma Than were former political prisoners.

In Hpa-An, Kayin State, water levels in the Thanlwin River have risen beyond the danger mark of 750 centimeters, reaching 850 centimeters. As a result, flooding has affected multiple areas within the town, according to local sources.

Beginning on July 25, heavy rainfall caused the river to rise rapidly, leading to flooding in several low-lying neighborhoods—namely Wards 1, 2, and 5—as well as near the Hpa-An General Hospital, Inn Lay Road, the floating market area, the Hpa-An Shwe Phar Si housing estate, and areas along the main road in front of the Two Elephants statue.

Residents living near the riverbanks have evacuated to temporary shelters set up at nearby locations such as Basic Education High Schools No. (1) and (3), and indoor sports facilities equipped for emergency accommodation.

Additionally, in Thaton Township, Mon State, flooding has also occurred on the Mawlamyine–Yangon highway near the Kyike Kaung Market due to heavy rainfall. Roads in the area have been temporarily closed.

In Namlan town, located in Hsipaw Township, northern Shan State and under the control of the military junta, local residents took matters into their own hands and captured a group of thieves, with thirteen individuals apprehended, according to Shwe Phimyae News Agency.

At around 3:00 p.m. on July 26, thirteen individuals—eleven men and two women—who were allegedly preparing to steal goods in downtown Namlan, were caught by a group of local residents, reports said.

Of those apprehended, the two women were released after being warned not to repeat the offense. The eleven men were reportedly handed over to local ethnic armed organizations.

Although thefts and robberies are said to occur frequently in junta-controlled areas, the military authorities have failed to take any enforcement or protective action. As a result, residents have resorted to self-policing methods to confront criminal activity themselves.

Despite efforts by U.S. President Donald Trump to mediate peace and initiate a ceasefire through phone calls with the prime ministers of both Thailand and Cambodia, clashes between the two nations continued on the ground, according to international news sources.

On July 26, during the ongoing fighting, Cambodian Army’s 7th Military Division Commander, General Doung Somneang, was reportedly killed due to an artillery strike from the Thai military. In addition, tens of thousands of Cambodian migrant workers in Thailand have begun returning home, and houses near the border areas have been damaged or set ablaze due to rocket attacks.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, current chair of ASEAN, has invited both parties to Kuala Lumpur for peace talks scheduled on July 28. The talks are expected to include proposals for restoring peace, and Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan stated, “Both sides have expressed full confidence in Malaysia and have requested us to act as mediator.”

UN Secretary-General AntΓ³nio Guterres also urged both sides to “immediately cease hostilities” and to engage in negotiations for a sustainable solution. During an emergency session of the UN Security Council held in New York on Friday, Cambodia’s ambassador reaffirmed that Cambodia wishes to resolve the issue peacefully.
