In Demoso Township, Karenni State, junta forces have been detaining civilians to use as human shields while also carrying out extrajudicial killings, according to a statement released by SSNDF/KNDF Battalion 103.
On August 8, junta forces launched a column into Demoso Township. Since then, they have been accused of committing atrocities including arbitrary arrests, unlawful shootings of civilians, and forcing detainees to act as human shields.
Reports indicate that civilians were compelled to walk in front of the column as protection and to transport military supplies. In one incident, troops entering a village allegedly shot and killed travelers on a main road without questioning them and carried out arbitrary detentions.
Due to the situation, the KNDF has urged the public to strictly adhere to its earlier August 10 safety directive, which warned civilians not to use the Union Highway between Loikaw–Demoso–Hpruso, nor the connecting feeder roads, in order to avoid being targeted or caught in clashes.
