๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 1. Prime Minister Man Win Khaing Than emphasizes that policy decisions must be made based on national unity, not regional divisions

August 1

At the 19/2025 Cabinet Meeting of the National Unity Government (NUG), Prime Minister Man Win Khaing Than underscored that policy decisions must not differ between the southern and northern regions, asserting the importance of unity in governance.

“Though we often speak in terms of southern and northern fronts due to the nature of the revolution, as the National Unity Government of the entire country, we must formulate policies in consideration of the overall national context. There cannot be one policy for the south and another for the north. However, when implementing policies, there may be necessary adjustments based on the specific regional situations. I believe all cabinet members understand this clearly. Administrative implementation must also be grounded in laying a strong foundation for our vision—a federal democratic system. That’s why we need to make a good start,” the Prime Minister stated.

During the meeting, Union Minister U Lwin Ko Latt from the Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration presented on the integrated office operations and administrative expenditures. Union Minister U Soe Thura Tun from the Ministry of Electricity and Energy also gave a briefing on the ministry’s three-pronged budget framework.

Following these presentations, the Prime Minister provided clarifications and discussions were held. The meeting concluded with a closing address by the Acting President.

๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 3. Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa once again urges the Myanmar military to cease violence and release all detainees, including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi

August 1

Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa reiterated her call to the Myanmar military to immediately halt all acts of violence, release all those arbitrarily detained—including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi—and take concrete actions to swiftly restore democratic governance in Myanmar.

Following the junta’s announcement on July 31 that it had lifted the state of emergency, Foreign Minister Kamikawa issued an official statement on August 1, urging the military regime to implement meaningful steps for democratic transition.

She expressed deep concern over the ongoing airstrikes and acts of violence, and condemned the continued arbitrary detention of numerous individuals, including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, more than four and a half years after the military coup in February 2021.

The military junta declared on July 31 that general elections would be held between December of this year and January 2026, following the lifting of the emergency.

Japan stated that general elections should be part of a genuine democratic process. The Japanese government emphasized that releasing detainees and holding sincere dialogue between relevant political parties is crucial to ensuring that these elections are not seen as superficial or lacking legitimacy. Otherwise, the Myanmar people could respond even more strongly, and peaceful conflict resolution would become increasingly difficult.

Thus, Japan again strongly urged the Myanmar military to end violence immediately, release all political detainees including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, and take firm action toward restoring democratic governance as quickly as possible.

Now that the military has lifted the emergency order, Japan calls on the junta to act in good faith and on all political stakeholders to seek peaceful resolution through honest efforts.

The Japanese government reaffirmed its continued commitment to listening closely to the voices of the Myanmar people, deepening discussions with relevant stakeholders, and supporting humanitarian aid and development assistance. Japan pledged to continue providing support for the livelihoods of people affected by the recent earthquake in March and by the long-running conflicts that have disrupted their means of survival.

๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 4. Yangon People’s Protest Group Calls for Global Participation in the 37th Anniversary of the 8-8-88 Umbrella Movement

August 1

The Yangon People’s Protest Group has called on the public to actively participate in the upcoming 37th anniversary of the Global 8-8-88 Umbrella Movement.

The historic 8888 Uprising, in which countless citizens courageously stood up against the one-party dictatorship backed by the military under the rule of Ne Win, will soon mark its 37th anniversary. The protest group emphasized that the movement remains a significant milestone in Myanmar’s ongoing struggle for democracy.

While the uprising succeeded in ousting the Burma Socialist Programme Party (BSPP), the country subsequently fell under the grip of successive military regimes—SLORC and SPDC—and has since been governed under the 2008 Constitution, which reserves 25% of parliamentary seats for the military. The group described this as a diluted and controlled form of democracy.

Following the military coup in 2021, which came after the 2020 general elections, Myanmar has once again been thrust under a repressive military dictatorship. The Yangon People’s Protest Group reaffirmed that various sectors of the population are continuing to rise up in resistance to this regime, striving to restore genuine democracy.

The group urged global participation in the 8-8-2025 movement, encouraging citizens from countries around the world to join the anniversary campaign by displaying umbrellas marked with the number “8”—a symbol of resistance across generations, from the 1988 democratic uprising to the current anti-coup revolution of 2021.

Actions such as staging protests with “88” umbrellas, marching to significant protest sites, wearing clothing emblazoned with the 8 symbol, or organizing any activity themed around the “8” symbol will be recognized as part of the 37th anniversary of the 8-8-88 movement.

Additionally, the Yangon People’s Protest Group encouraged the use of impactful slogans such as “Generation of Revolution, Rise Up and Resist,” “8-8-88: The Struggle Continues,” and “Together for the People’s Liberation.”

August 1

A new fundraising campaign titled Shwe Pyay Skyfruit has been launched to strengthen and intensify military operations of Battalion (4) under Shwebo District.

“Shwebo District Battalion (4) has been conducting effective military operations both on the ground and in the air within its controlled territory. The unit also manufactures its own drone bombs, which cost between 100,000 and 700,000 MMK per unit depending on the type. To help increase the effectiveness and momentum of military activities by this battalion, we have launched the ‘Shwe Pyay Skyfruit’ campaign,” organizers said.

The campaign runs for the full month of August—from August 1 to 31—with a fundraising target of 10 million MMK.

Supporters of the revolution can contribute as little as 5,000 MMK or any affordable amount. In return, donors will receive a certificate of appreciation.
