๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 1. Ko Htein Lin expresses gratitude to Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko for standing in solidarity with the people of Myanmar

August 4

Ko Htein Lin, the youngest son of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, has expressed his gratitude to Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko for standing in solidarity with the people of Myanmar.

On August 4, Ko Htein Lin made a statement via video, expressing the following:

“I would like to thank Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko for strongly raising, during the official meeting, the need to restore democracy in Myanmar, the release of political prisoners including my mother, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, and an end to violent acts. As the Minister rightly stated, holding elections without genuine political progress will only further destabilize the country. I deeply value Japan’s stance, and I hope this principled position will be recognized globally and lead to increased international cooperation toward achieving peace and democracy in Myanmar.”

In a press statement issued on August 1, Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko said:

“More than four and a half years after the military coup in Myanmar in February 2021, political figures including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi continue to be detained, and airstrikes and other violent acts persist. The situation remains stagnant and shows no signs of improvement. We are extremely concerned and strongly condemn these actions.”

The statement further urged the Myanmar military to immediately halt acts of violence, release all those arbitrarily detained including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, and take concrete steps toward the swift restoration of democratic governance in the country.

๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 3. UNDP offering guidance on repairing or demolishing earthquake-damaged homes

August 4

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is currently providing technical guidance on whether to repair or demolish homes damaged by the March 28 earthquake in Sagaing Region, which killed more than 3,000 people and severely damaged housing across the area.

“Although more than 100 days have passed since the earthquakes struck Myanmar, many families are still unaware whether their homes are structurally safe. That’s why UNDP is assisting with technical assessments of the damaged houses. Experienced engineers are inspecting the conditions of homes and advising families on whether repairs can ensure safety or whether full demolition is necessary,” said an official.

The assessment process involves a three-tier risk categorization systemblue, orange, and red—to evaluate whether homes are safe to inhabit.

According to UNDP Myanmar, the aim is to provide early recovery assistance to up to 3.5 million people, including support for minor repairs, major rehabilitation, or relocation in cases where homes are deemed uninhabitable.

๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 6. Thailand to begin issuing new CI (Certificate of Identity) documents to Myanmar migrant workers starting August 6

August 4

Starting from August 6, the Thai government will begin replacing old Certificate of Identity (CI) documents with new ones for Myanmar migrant workers as part of identity verification procedures, according to an announcement by the Director-General of the Thai Department of Employment.

Myanmar-operated service centers in Thailand will handle the document replacements. However, individuals with new biometric (digital) profiles are not yet included in this replacement process.

The cost of replacing an old CI document with a new one is reported to range between 5,000 to 6,000 baht, and officials have issued a warning to beware of brokers and fraudsters impersonating agents.

Once this phase of CI document replacement is completed, it is expected that the authorities will proceed to issue CI documents to individuals who do not yet have any proof of identity, including new undocumented workers who already possess a Pink Card (temporary work permit for migrant workers).

๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 7. Resistance members advise travelers to disable VPNs to avoid arrest at junta checkpoints

August 4

Resistance members have issued a warning to VPN users, urging them to disable their VPNs while traveling, as the military junta has started arresting people at roadside checkpoints for having VPNs installed on their devices.

“As Nway Oo Bank gains momentum and the attacks on Min Aung Hlaing increase, the junta is reacting. In the beginning, they ignored it. But now that the bank is becoming successful, they’re restricting access to the bank app and Bee IP. People have been bypassing these blocks using VPNs—so now the junta has begun arresting VPN users at checkpoints. If you need to pass through a checkpoint, make sure your VPN is turned off,” said one resistance member.

At one such checkpoint—Pantan Gate, located between Yangon and Ayeyarwady Regions—military troops, police, Pyusawhti militia, and plainclothes security personnel reportedly searched smartphones. On the afternoon of August 2, they arrested four travelers for having VPNs on their devices.

๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 8. 104 pro-democracy activists and civilians killed across Myanmar in July 2025 due to violence by the military junta

August 4

A total of 104 pro-democracy activists and civilians were killed in Myanmar during July 2025 alone due to violence perpetrated by the military junta.

According to information compiled by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), 5 individuals were newly arrested for political reasons in July, while a total of 104 were killed—including 10 people who died after being detained under various circumstances.

These figures are based on verified and accessible data collected by AAPP. However, the organization emphasized that actual numbers on the ground are likely higher due to underreporting and limited access.

Additionally, AAPP is currently working to verify a separate list of approximately 140 other deaths reported during July.

“In the four and a half years since the unlawful coup, the junta has persistently committed war crimes and crimes against humanity—including burning down civilian homes, looting, torture, arbitrary sentencing, and forcibly conscripting young people into the military. As long as the military remains involved in politics, there will be no development in the country—only deterioration. The junta may keep changing its name and seizing power unlawfully, but it will never gain public support. Even if they promise elections, no one should trust this military regime that has lied throughout its entire existence,” said Ko Bo Kyi, Joint Secretary of AAPP.
