On September 9, Justice For Myanmar revealed that Chinese company Geedge Networks and several Myanmar telecom companies are assisting the illegal military junta in carrying out its digital terror operations.

The newly released report exposes major collaborations between Geedge Networks—a Chinese company linked to the Chinese government—and Myanmar’s illegitimate junta in supplying, installing, and operationalizing a Chinese-style internet shutdown and surveillance mega-system inside Myanmar.

The system reportedly provides the junta with unprecedented capabilities to track, arrest, torture, and kill civilians.

Justice For Myanmar’s report, titled “Spyware Highway – Geedge’s Role in the Junta’s Digital Terror Campaign”, also identifies 13 Myanmar telecom and technology companies involved in enabling the junta’s continued use of Geedge’s advanced surveillance and censorship technology. These companies include:

  • ATOM (formerly Telenor Myanmar)
  • Mytel
  • Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications (MPT)
  • Ooredoo Myanmar
  • Frontiir
  • StreamNet
  • Golden TMH Telecom
  • Internet Maekhong Network (IM-Net)
  • Myanmar Broadband Telecom (MBT)
  • Myanmar Telecommunication Network (MTN)

Justice For Myanmar spokesperson Ma Yadana Maung stated:

“The surveillance technology sold and installed by Geedge Networks, and deployed through cooperation with Myanmar’s internet service providers, poses grave risks for anyone criticizing the junta, speaking out for the truth, or trying to access independent news sources. Geedge is helping the military junta strengthen its ability to track down, arrest, torture, and kill activists.”
