📌📌 2. NLD Rejects the Junta’s Sham Election and Urges the International Community Not to Recognize It

Radio NUG

The National League for Democracy (NLD) issued a statement on October 28, declaring that it completely rejects and will not recognize the sham election planned by the military junta. The party also urged the international community not to recognize the election, not to provide any technical or financial assistance, and not to send observers to monitor it.

In its Central Executive Committee statement, the NLD reaffirmed that the November 8, 2020 general election was free, fair, and internationally recognized by world leaders, diplomats, and the United Nations. The statement condemned the military coup of February 1, 2021, which was carried out based on unsubstantiated allegations of voter fraud, as illegal.

The statement further highlighted that since the coup, the junta’s systematic human rights violations have caused over 3.6 million internally displaced persons and more than 19,000 political prisoners. It also stressed that the election the junta is attempting to organize could only take place in about one-third of the country’s territory and would not meet democratic standards.

During the 2020 election, voting successfully took place in 1,171 constituencies (95.38%), with a voter turnout exceeding 71%, and the NLD won 82.36% of constituencies, the statement detailed.

The election was recognized by international observer organizations including ANFREL, PACE, The Carter Center, and a Japanese observer mission, all of which affirmed that it was free and fair.

The statement recalled that international leaders — including Chinese President Xi Jinping, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, British Foreign Secretary Nigel Adams, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi — all congratulated the success of the 2020 election. The Union Election Commission officially certified the results as valid.

Reports from IFES, ANFREL, and IDEA confirmed that the junta’s allegations of voter fraud were baseless. According to the Myanmar Peace Monitor, since the coup, 75,938 civilian homes have been destroyed and 8,101 civilians have been killed.

The NLD noted that the junta’s planned election would not allow free expression of the people’s will, would be limited to only one-third of the territory, and would include more than half of the seats reserved for military representatives, making true civilian representation impossible. Surveys by ISP Myanmar and the Blue Shirt Initiative showed that over 81% of the population opposes the junta’s election.

The statement emphasized that the junta’s election plan is not included in the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus or UN Security Council Resolution 2669, and that both the European Union and ASEAN parliamentarians have expressed opposition to it.

The NLD reaffirmed its firm commitment to the path of establishing a Federal Democratic Union, and stated that it is collaborating closely with ethnic allies to draft and implement the Interim Federal Constitution.

Radio NUG

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that Malaysia will invite 27 ethnic armed organizations and all opposition groups to Kuala Lumpur for an inclusive dialogue on the Myanmar issue, to be held before the junta’s planned election.

As the ASEAN Chair, Malaysia stressed that the Myanmar crisis must be resolved by the people of Myanmar themselves. Prime Minister Anwar also noted that ASEAN is still considering the junta’s invitation for election observers to be sent to Myanmar.

Following the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in Kuala Lumpur on October 26, a 28-point joint statement was released. It reaffirmed that since the junta has made no meaningful progress in implementing the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus, military leaders will continue to be barred from attending ASEAN summits and related meetings. Only non-political representatives would be allowed to participate.

The statement emphasized that the Five-Point Consensus must be implemented and all violence must cease before any election is held, and that the political crisis must first be resolved.

📌📌 5. Parcels and Letters Delivered to Political Prisoners in Prisons Across the Country

October 28
Radio NUG

The Political Prisoners Support Group announced that parcels and letters had been delivered to political prisoners detained in various prisons across Myanmar.

According to the group, supporters who contacted and contributed to assist political prisoners helped make this delivery possible. In October, they sent parcels containing letters, snacks, coffee, curries, and personal-use items to political detainees held unlawfully since the military coup of February 1, 2021.

It was reported that in October, such parcels were successfully delivered to political prisoners in eight prisons across the country through the coordination of the Political Prisoners Support Group.

Currently, over 5,000 political prisoners remain unlawfully detained in various prisons. Many of them struggle to receive parcels from their families, lack access to medical care, or are denied visitation rights and blocked from receiving any supplies.

The statement added that families are facing multiple restrictions and intimidation, preventing them from sending food, medicine, and other personal-use items to their detained loved ones. In response, the Political Prisoners Support Group called on members of the public who wish to help to donate through the group’s coordination channels to ensure assistance reaches those in need.

📌📌 6. Civil Society Groups Designate October 28 to December 31 as the “Period of Boycotting the Sham Military Election”

October 28
Radio NUG

Civil society organizations and the general public, who regard the military junta’s planned election as illegitimate and fraudulent, have designated the period from October 28 to December 31 as the “Period of Boycotting the Sham Military Election,” according to an announcement issued by GSCB.

The statement explained that since the February 2021 military coup, the junta has relied on violence and corruption to maintain its power. As a result, over 12 million people are now facing food insecurity, while drug trafficking, gambling, and daily violence have spread across the country, plunging Myanmar into a state of lawlessness and instability.

The announcement further condemned the junta’s so-called election as “a dishonorable act of violence, deception, and imprisonment disguised as an electoral process.” It declared that such an election would bring no meaningful change or benefit to the nation.

The statement urged all citizens across the country to collectively boycott and oppose the election through various forms of peaceful resistance, reaffirming the people’s commitment to rejecting the junta’s fraudulent political maneuvers.

📌📌 7. Non-CDM Teacher Arrested for Beating Her Elderly Aunt and Niece with a Hammer and Stealing Gold and Cash in Chanmyathazi Township

October 28
Radio NUG

The junta’s so-called “election commission” announced that a Non-CDM teacher was arrested for attacking her 84-year-old aunt and niece with a hammer in Chanmyathazi Township, Mandalay Region, before stealing gold and cash from their home.

The alleged perpetrator, identified as Daw Soe Soe Tun, is reportedly the niece of the deceased and a middle school teacher at Basic Education Middle School No. 4, Ward (3), Pyin Oo Lwin.

According to reports, on the morning of October 25, she struck her 36-year-old niece three times with a hammer while the victim was sleeping. She then attacked her aunt, who was sitting on a chair, hitting her once on the head, before breaking open a wooden chest and stealing one 10-tical gold bar and 10 million kyats in cash.

As a result of the assault, the 84-year-old retired librarian died at her home in Myothit (2) Ward, Chanmyathazi Township, while her niece sustained two injuries to the head and left ear.

The junta’s report claimed that the perpetrator committed the crime due to financial difficulties and failure to obtain a loan from the victims.

Since the military coup, Myanmar has experienced a sharp increase in murders, robberies, and thefts — even in major cities — as the country continues to suffer under widespread economic hardship and lawlessness created by the junta’s rule.
