๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 5. Myanmar Remains the World's Largest Opium Producer After Military Coup

December 13
Radio NUG

According to a report released by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) on December 12, 2024, Myanmar continues to be the world’s largest producer of opium, even though opium cultivation in the country decreased by 4% compared to the previous year.

Shan State in Myanmar remains the region with the highest opium cultivation and production. However, the report noted an 18% increase in opium cultivation in Chin State this year.

In 2024, Myanmar had 45,200 hectares under opium cultivation, with Shan State accounting for 88% of the total cultivated area.

Although opium cultivation slightly declined in northern and southern Shan State this year, the eastern part of Shan State saw a 10% increase in opium cultivation.

Similarly, Kachin State experienced a 10% decline in opium cultivation, while Kayah State recorded an 8% increase.

After the Taliban banned narcotics in Afghanistan in 2022, Myanmar overtook Afghanistan as the largest opium-producing country in 2023.

Despite a moderate 4% reduction in opium cultivation in Myanmar in 2024, the continued ban on narcotics in Afghanistan allowed Myanmar to maintain its dominance in the global opium market.

The UNODC report highlighted that opium cultivation in Myanmar increased after the military seized power, attributing the rise to armed conflicts, which remain a primary driver of illicit opium production.

December 13
Radio NUG

Myanmar’s military junta reported on December 12 that over 9 billion kyat worth of narcotics were seized in Me Yan Village, Tachileik. The individual involved was identified as a leader of a People’s Militia.

The suspect, Sai Shwe Aung, serves as a People's Militia leader in the Yan Mai Village tract. According to local sources, he was armed and failed to present his People's Militia identification during inspection, leading to the discovery of the drugs in his vehicle.

The seized narcotics included 115 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine (commonly referred to as "ice") with an estimated market value of 9.2 billion kyat.

Since the suspect was affiliated with the junta-backed People's Militia, authorities downplayed his association and omitted details about his armed status in the official statement to avoid tarnishing the military's image.
