📌📌 4. Arrest of Rakhine Youths in Yangon Linked to Deputy Minister U Zaw Aye Maung

The military council in Myanmar has been arresting Rakhine youths in various parts of Yangon on various pretexts, with direct involvement and instructions from U Zaw Aye Maung, Deputy Minister for Ethnic Affairs of the military regime, according to a report by Western News.

Since December 2024 and January 2025, at least 50 Rakhine youths have been detained in townships such as Mayangone, Hlaing Tharyar, Shwepyithar, North Dagon, South Dagon, North Okkalapa, and Thaketa. Reports indicate that the military council has been conducting detailed checks, including names and identification numbers, during the arrests.

During the military leader Min Aung Hlaing’s visit to Yangon in December, similar discussions reportedly took place, leading to orders for checks on Rakhine individuals for links to the Arakan Army (AA).

Most of the arrested youths were reportedly preparing to travel abroad for work in countries like Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, while some were engaged in traditional handicraft businesses.

U Zaw Aye Maung, previously the Rakhine Ethnic Affairs Minister under the NLD government, now serves as the Deputy Minister for Ethnic Affairs under the military regime. He is also a former senior leader of the Arakan National Party (ANP).
