In Phaung Pyin Township, Mawlaik District, Sagaing Region, areas that were previously controlled by the military council and the Shan Nationalities Army (SNA) have now mostly come under the control of the People's Defense Forces (PDF) coalition, according to the Kachin News Group.

Operations in Phaung Pyin Township began in March 2024. Of the 45 village tracts in the township, the defense forces now control 43, leaving only Pin Thar Village, Auk Taung Village, and Phaung Pyin Town under SNA and military council control.

Currently, the last strongholds—Phaung Pyin Town and two villages—are defended by two infantry battalions, LIB-367 and LIB-368, as well as reinforcements from LIB-272 stationed near Lahe Township and local SNA forces. Together, they amount to about 500 troops, forming a blockade.

While fighting subsided toward the end of 2024, military council and SNA forces continued aerial bombings and airstrikes, leaving the situation tense and susceptible to renewed clashes at any time.

Additionally, the SNA and military council have blocked the Phaung Pyin-Homalin Road, forcing locals to use alternative routes for travel. Goods now rely heavily on air transport, causing prices to skyrocket in the area.

Amid ongoing clashes to capture villages in Phaung Pyin Township, airstrikes by the military council have caused significant civilian casualties, including the elderly and children, and widespread destruction of homes.

According to the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), the Military Council conducted another bombing raid on Kyaukme Township in Northern Shan State, within the TNLA Brigade 2 region, resulting in one civilian death and three injuries.

The airstrike occurred on January 27 at approximately 2:18 PM, targeting the town’s night market and district office. The attack was carried out using jet fighters, the TNLA reported.

The explosion caused significant damage to at least five houses, killed one civilian, and injured three others.

This incident followed a previous bombing by the Military Council on January 25, which targeted the Kyaukme Township Public Hospital. That attack claimed the lives of two striking medical staff (CDM) and one patient, while over 20 healthcare workers and civilian patients were injured.

The defectors fled from a frontline base in Pinlaung Township, Southern Shan State, to the NUG Defense Ministry’s Naypyidaw People's Defense Force (PDF).
