๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 1. Hearing Session on Myanmar’s Democracy by MP Alliance Supporting Myanmar Democracy and NUG Japan Office, with Union Minister Naw Susanna Hla Hla Soe in Attendance

To mark four years since the failed military coup, a hearing session will be held to present the current realities in Myanmar, including the aftermath of the military’s power grab, the ensuing conflicts, and the challenges faced by the public. This session is aimed at briefing Japanese government officials, parliamentarians, international diplomats, and media representatives. It will be jointly organized by the Alliance of Parliamentarians Supporting Myanmar Democracy and the National Unity Government (NUG)’s Representative Office in Japan, and will take place at the parliamentarians' office.

Union Minister Naw Susanna Hla Hla Soe, from the Ministry of Women, Youth, and Children Affairs under NUG, along with ministry advisors, will participate in the session to provide insights and engage in discussions. Those wishing to attend and show their support can register to participate.

The venue has a capacity limit of approximately 200 attendees, and the event is scheduled for February 3.

๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 2. Successful Conclusion of the Second Chin Women’s Forum

The second Chin Women’s Forum was successfully held this month in a location within Chinland.

The forum covered topics such as women’s, youth’s, and children’s rights; women and leadership; the role of Chin women in nation-building; and mental health care. Discussions and learning sessions were conducted over two full days.

๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 3. Discussion on "Crimes Against Humanity: Challenges and the Path Ahead for IIMM" Held at BRAC University with IIMM Head Mr. Nicholas Koumjian

Mr. Nicholas Koumjian, Head of the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM), attended and delivered a speech at a discussion titled "Crimes Against Humanity: Challenges and the Path Ahead for IIMM". The event took place on January 24 at BRAC University.

In the session, Mr. Koumjian shared profound insights into accountability for perpetrators of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. He also highlighted the plight of the Rohingya, shedding light on IIMM’s history, ongoing activities, and its vision for the future.

๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 4. Myanmar Nationals Eligible for U.S. Visa Renewal Without Interview

The U.S. Embassy in Myanmar announced on January 27 that Myanmar nationals applying for visa renewals can now do so without requiring an interview.

The interview waiver applies to those renewing the following visas:

  • C1/D visas (for international airline and maritime workers) that expired within the last 48 months.
  • F1 student visas.
  • B1, B2, or B1/B2 tourist visas that expired within the past 12 months.

Renewals will be processed under the original terms of approval.

๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 5. Eight Suspects, Including Thai Police and a Myanmar Citizen, Involved in Kidnapping Seven Chinese Nationals

Thai authorities have arrested eight suspects in connection with the kidnapping of seven Chinese nationals in Phibun Mangsahan District, Ubon Ratchathani Province, Thailand, according to The Nation news agency.

Among the arrested suspects are four Thai police officers, one soldier, two civilians, and one Myanmar citizen.

The seven Chinese nationals were abducted from a resort on January 23, with the perpetrators demanding a ransom for their safe release. A Laotian national reported the incident on Facebook, claiming the kidnappers contacted the victims’ families and demanded a ransom of 5 million baht, which was later negotiated down to 3 million baht.

One of the victims managed to send their location to a friend in Laos via a mobile phone, who then alerted Thai authorities for assistance.

Thai police and immigration officials raided the resort, successfully rescuing the seven hostages and arresting the eight suspects involved in the incident.

๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 6. Junta Forces Abduct Youths and Search Passenger Vehicles in Ye-U Township

On January 26, junta forces in Ye-U Township carried out a series of abductions, targeting remaining young men and women in residential areas. Reports indicate that at least five youths were taken, including three from Aung San Ward and two from Makyetaw Village, according to Peoples Defense Comrade (PDC).

Additionally, junta forces have been stopping and inspecting passenger vehicles, including Ansatone and AD vans traveling from cities like Myitkyina and Mandalay to Ye-U. Male passengers are being pulled from vehicles and detained, while vehicle parts are reportedly being confiscated unlawfully.

On the same day, more than ten male passengers were detained at checkpoints in Ye-U Township. Families of the detained individuals have been attempting to secure their release by paying ransoms. Approximately three individuals were released after paying bribes, but many remain in detention.

Due to ongoing risks, residents, particularly youths and young adults, are being urged to avoid traveling to Ye-U or other towns where junta forces are conducting similar operations. Non-essential travel is discouraged in the coming days.

๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 7. Airstrikes on Civilian Targets, Including Hospitals and Schools, Leave Over 30 Dead

The junta, known for committing war crimes, has continued targeting civilian structures such as hospitals and schools in a series of airstrikes. On January 22, an airstrike hit Naung Cho Township, Shan State; on January 25, another strike targeted a public hospital in Kyaukme Township, Shan State; and on January 26, a school in Singwet Village, Myingyan Township, Mandalay Region was bombed, according to a January 27 report by AAPP.

These attacks have resulted in over 30 civilian casualties, including children, with many others injured.
