๐๐ 3. Thai Authorities’ Deportation of Myanmar Nationals Seen as a Means of Supplying Recruits to the Military Junta
February 25
The mass deportation of Myanmar nationals by Thai authorities is being perceived as an effort to supply recruits to the military junta, according to assessments from migrant workers in Thailand.
On February 24, Thai authorities deported around 200 Myanmar nationals through the customs checkpoint in Chaonang Hung village, Ranong District, sending them back to Myanmar.
"Here, those with expired work permits cannot renew or extend them. Even the Myanmar embassy itself seems complicit in making things difficult for migrant workers. At first, the authorities were after money, but now they want people for military conscription. The Thai government’s actions essentially serve to round up and hand over people to the Myanmar junta. Who will save us?" said one migrant worker.
In the third week of February, Thai authorities in Bangkok carried out raids and arrested nearly 20 Myanmar nationals under the pretext of illegal street vending. There have been ongoing arbitrary arrests in shopping centers and marketplaces.
