March 2
Radio NUG
On February 28, during the United Nations Human Rights Council session held in Geneva, Switzerland, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker TΓΌrk stated that since the military junta seized power, Myanmar has become one of the worst human rights violators in the world.
He highlighted that the military regime is subjecting civilians to brutal oppression, causing severe economic decline, and forcing people to flee their homes, among other unspeakable hardships.
Since the 2021 military coup, as resistance forces have intensified their attacks, the weakened junta has increasingly resorted to frequent airstrikes and violent crackdowns, leading to the displacement of approximately 3.7 million people.
Furthermore, due to various systemic failures, around 15 million people faced food insecurity in the past year, with nearly 2 million people now on the brink of famine.
The UN High Commissioner also urged the international community to halt the sale of aviation fuel to the Myanmar military and to put an end to the impunity enjoyed by military leaders despite their gross human rights violations.
