ππ 1. National Unity Government Issues Message Marking the 25th Anniversary of Karenni National Day
April 11
The National Unity Government (NUG) has issued a message of congratulations in honor of the 25th Karenni National Day, which fell on April 10, 2025. The statement offered sincere wishes for peace, prosperity, and safety to all Karenni people residing both within Myanmar and abroad.
It recognized that the Karenni people are an ethnic group with a long-standing tradition of preserving their unique culture, language, and customs throughout Myanmar's history. The first Karenni National Conference, held on April 10, 2000, designated this date as Karenni National Day—a tradition that now marks its 25th anniversary this year.
The NUG expressed its deep respect and recognition for the Karenni people, who have upheld a strong sense of national identity and have actively contributed to the nation-building process across generations.
This period, the statement noted, is a deeply challenging time for Myanmar, as the country is facing both human-made and natural disasters. The people continue to endure tremendous hardship and oppression under the brutal rule of the military junta, which persistently seeks to seize and maintain power through unlawful and violent means.
Despite enduring years of severe oppression at the hands of the military dictatorship, the Karenni people—alongside citizens across the country—have risen to participate in the ongoing Spring Revolution, fighting for national liberation and equality. The NUG reiterated its profound recognition and respect for the Karenni people's role in this movement.
Concluding the message, the NUG expressed its aspiration that the 25th anniversary of Karenni National Day will further strengthen the unity and resilience of the Karenni people, enabling them to overcome present challenges and to stand in solidarity with all ethnic groups in building a fully liberated, just, and self-determined Federal Democratic Union.

ππ 5. United Nations Appeals for Additional $241 Million in Earthquake Relief Aid for Myanmar
April 11
The United Nations has called for an additional USD 241.6 million in humanitarian funding in response to the catastrophic 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28. The disaster has so far claimed the lives of over 3,600 people, injured around 4,800, and left 184 individuals missing.
The earthquake affected more than 9 million people across 58 townships, destroying thousands of structures including hospitals and schools. Continued aftershocks in the hardest-hit regions are exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis.
To address the emergency, UN agencies are seeking the additional USD 241.6 million to scale up assistance. This request forms part of Myanmar’s 2025 Humanitarian Response Plan, under which USD 134 million in aid has already been allocated.
The updated plan aims to assist an estimated 2 million people in urgent need of help, including 4.3 million individuals who were already in need even before the earthquake struck.
Myanmar remains in the grip of a protracted civil conflict following the military coup in February 2021. As a result, nearly one-third of the country's population—around 20 million people—were already facing severe humanitarian hardship even before the disaster unfolded.
