According to the Pyawbwe Township Fire Department, a total of 20 people—including 10 employees of KBZ Bank—died when the bank’s five-story building collapsed following a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake on March 28.
Nine surviving bank staff members and four customers were successfully rescued from the rubble. The fatalities include 10 bank employees, one insurance agent, and nine customers.
Based on official figures from the Pyawbwe Township Fire Department, 16 individuals were rescued alive from the collapsed building, but three of them died en route to the hospital. Seventeen deceased individuals were recovered from under the debris.
The bodies of the deceased were identified by family members through direct visual confirmation and then handed over for final arrangements.
Survivors' families reported that the Pyawbwe KBZ Bank branch had locked its doors following the first tremor and did not allow people to exit. The building collapsed during a second tremor. Instead of prioritizing the rescue of those trapped inside, the bank’s management called in forces from the military junta for security, prioritizing the retrieval of money.
