๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 2. Dr. Soe Thurya Zaw Stresses Importance of Public Oversight in the Development of the Adolescent PDF Forces

Radio NUG

As Myanmar's revolutionary People's Defense Force (PDF) reaches what can be described as its adolescent stage—both physically and mentally—Dr. Soe Thurya Zaw emphasized via social media on May 11 that this is a critical period requiring appropriate nurturing and systematic oversight.

He stated:

“Our PDF is currently transitioning through its adolescent phase. This is no longer a force made up of inexperienced youths with no combat training, no weapons, and no financial resources. At the same time, it has not yet matured into a fully developed, disciplined, and well-institutionalized military force that functions with both technical prowess and moral integrity.

(1) In terms of weaponry, while some arms are available, they are far from adequate.

(2) Though territorial control has improved compared to the past, there are still very few liberated zones where the enemy has been completely expelled.

(3) Financially, despite collecting taxes and fees, the movement still suffers from budget shortages that hinder broader revolutionary support.”

On the psychological front, he warned that some PDF units and leaders are beginning to prioritize personal interest over revolutionary objectives. He noted signs of declining ethical standards and a worrying attachment to rank and authority. Therefore, he called for responsible leaders to impose effective oversight and steer the forces back on track.

He added:

“If we fail to supervise and manage this adolescent-stage PDF in an organized and disciplined manner, we risk turning it into a force dominated by warlords and their loyal militias, valuing personal gain over national liberation.”

Dr. Soe Thurya Zaw warned that if the PDF is not properly guided during this critical developmental phase, there is a serious risk of it devolving into factions characterized by corruption and self-interest, similar to the notorious Zaw Kant Lant-style forces. Thus, he urged both responsible authorities and the general public to engage in the nurturing and supervision of the PDF to ensure it develops along the correct revolutionary path.

Their appeal includes the following demands:

  1. A prompt, impartial, and thorough investigation into the child rape and murder case in Phar Pyaw Village, ensuring the perpetrator is identified and held accountable under the full extent of the law without any consideration for leniency or clemency.
  2. Guaranteeing justice for the victim and her surviving family members through an appropriate and fair legal process.
  3. Implementation of effective measures to prevent future acts of violence, particularly in the Arakan region, and to protect women and children from such brutal crimes.

The Arakan Army (AA) has reportedly arrested and is interrogating a male suspect. Meanwhile, both local residents and civil society groups are urging swift action to ensure justice is served.
