๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 5. Record-High 19.9 Million People in Myanmar in Need of Humanitarian Assistance; Additional 2 Million Require Emergency Aid After Earthquake

May 23
Radio NUG

The number of people in need of humanitarian assistance in Myanmar has risen to a record-high 19.9 million, and an additional 2 million people are now in urgent need of emergency support following the recent earthquake, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA Myanmar).

Myanmar continues to face a complex humanitarian crisis due to recurring natural disasters and ongoing armed conflict. The country is also grappling with persistent protection risks and humanitarian challenges, with an estimated 3.5 million people currently displaced from their homes nationwide.

The powerful twin earthquakes that struck on March 28 caused widespread destruction in both urban and rural areas, resulting in loss of life, the collapse of homes and essential infrastructure, and disruptions to livelihoods, UN OCHA reported.

As of now, funding for the 2025 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan (HNRP) stands at only 7.8%, while the specific response plan for the earthquake has received just 17.2% of the required funding.

The report emphasizes the urgent need for increased funding and the timely delivery of pledged donations to strengthen humanitarian aid and ensure that assistance reaches the most affected communities.

Justice For Myanmar has revealed that Aung Myo Min Din, the founder and chairman of Amazing Group of Companies and Adventure Myanmar Group, owns at least five hotel businesses built on land leased from the Myanmar military and its affiliated economic conglomerates.

Aung Myo Min Din, who founded both Adventure Myanmar Group and Amazing Group of Companies (widely known under the brand name “Alanzayar”), has been identified as a prominent crony with a significant record of unethical business practices.

He is known to have close personal and business ties to Myanmar’s military junta and its leader Min Aung Hlaing. Reportedly, he was once a student of Kyu Kyu Hla, the wife of Min Aung Hlaing, and is even said to have played a paternal role akin to that of an adoptive father to their son, Aung Pyae Sone.

These close connections to the junta have reportedly afforded Aung Myo Min Din privileged access to land across the country, enabling him to build a vast hotel empire under the Amazing brand. According to Justice For Myanmar, he owns at least five hotels situated on military-leased land or land leased from military conglomerates.

Among these properties is the Amazing Ngapali Resort, which is said to have been constructed on land in Rakhine State that was confiscated from local residents by the former military regime.
