Acting President of the National Unity Government (NUG), Duwa Lashi La, posted on platform X, extending his congratulations and welcome to Pope Leo XIV.
“We welcome and congratulate Pope Leo XIV. At a time when the world is facing uncertainty and instability, this is a profoundly significant moment. The people of Myanmar look to the Holy Father as a beacon of peace and justice. They view him as a voice for the poor, the marginalized, the homeless, and the oppressed,” said the Acting President.
Global leaders have also issued statements of congratulations upon the appointment of Pope Leo XIV.
Cardinal Robert Prevost of the United States was elected and appointed as Pope during the month of May.

๐ 2. Prime Minister Calls for Adequate Bomb Shelter Provision at Ground Universities

Prime Minister Mann Win Khaing Than has called for sufficient bomb shelter provisions at ground-based universities.
He made this statement during the 17th meeting (17/2025) of the Central Committee for Interim Public Administration under the National Unity Government.
“Only through broad public awareness of the university entrance process can the people have trust in our government's education system and participate actively. Regarding the opening of ground universities, it is essential to take serious precautions against aerial threats. It is also crucial that bomb shelters be adequately installed at these universities,” the Prime Minister said.
He further noted:
“Ground hospitals, clinics, and mobile medical teams have gained widespread recognition. Despite limitations in manpower, medicines, and medical equipment, they are actively and successfully providing healthcare services, delivering babies, and meeting public needs. I would like to express sincere appreciation to both ministry officials and every individual health worker on the ground.”
Additionally, the Prime Minister emphasized that in order to effectively deliver essential services such as education and healthcare to the public, strong tax and administrative systems are fundamental. He urged ministries to collaborate effectively and continue implementing operations in a coordinated and efficient manner.

๐ 3. National Unity Government Discloses Healthcare Expenditures for Civilian and Revolutionary Services

The National Unity Government (NUG) has disclosed its expenditures on healthcare services for both civilian and military (revolutionary) sectors.
The Ministry of Health stated on May 9 that it has been delivering healthcare services to revolutionary fighters and the public through CDM (Civil Disobedience Movement) health workers, civilian medical personnel, and volunteer health professionals who are actively participating in the non-violent anti-junta resistance.
According to reports, over the past four years, the Ministry of Health has spent:
MMK 18,304,213,201 on civilian healthcare services, and
MMK 3,341,140,398 on revolutionary-related healthcare operations.

๐๐ 4. Meeting Between the Chairperson of the Sagaing Federal Unit Parliament and the Sagaing Forum Federation on Earthquake Relief Efforts

On May 7, 2025, the Chairperson of the Sagaing Federal Unit Parliament and accompanying delegation held a field-level meeting with responsible members of the Sagaing Forum Federation.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed ongoing collaborative efforts aimed at supporting the earthquake-affected communities in Sagaing Region. These included various relief and humanitarian aid operations that both entities have been jointly carrying out.
Furthermore, discussions were also held on collaboration concerning the interim constitutional framework of the Sagaing Federal Unit and the upcoming operational plans, according to information from the Sagaing Federal Unit Parliament.

๐๐ 5. UK Government Confirms Its Earthquake Relief Funds Do Not Flow to the Myanmar Military

The UK Embassy in Yangon has clarified in May that none of the UK Government's relief funds for earthquake-affected communities in Myanmar are channeled to the Myanmar military.
“More than a month after the powerful earthquake in Myanmar, millions of people are still in need of emergency humanitarian assistance. The UK, along with partner organizations including the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), continues to provide life-saving support to those in need,” stated the Embassy.
The UK Government reiterated that it continues to call for unhindered access for humanitarian aid delivery and for the safety of aid workers operating in Myanmar. It firmly emphasized that none of its funds are flowing to the Myanmar military.
To date, the UK Government has provided a total of £25 million in relief funds. These funds have been used to support more than 116,000 people in need through local partner organizations.

๐๐ 6. Justice For Myanmar Urges Preparation for the Second Wave of "Dirty Over 30" Campaign, Calling for Pressure on ASEAN Cronies and Tycoons

Justice For Myanmar (JFM) has issued a call to action, urging that now is the time to apply pressure on ASEAN-region tycoons and cronies, and to prepare for the release of the second wave of its “Dirty Over 30” campaign.
Following the military coup attempt, Singapore became the third-largest arms exporter to Myanmar, with arms trade valued at USD 254 million, according to the 2023 report by the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar.
JFM previously launched the first “Dirty Over 30” list, and civil society organizations from Southeast Asia and beyond participated in the "Do More Singapore" campaign. An open letter to the Singaporean government was signed by 430 organizations, and over 27,000 individuals signed the online petition. The hashtags #DirtyOver30 and #DoMoreSingapore collectively garnered over 67 million views across social media platforms. The campaign also received coverage in Singaporean media.
According to the UN Special Rapporteur’s 2024 report, military-related exports from Singapore to Myanmar have decreased by 83%.
JFM reiterated that this is the right moment to intensify pressure on ASEAN tycoons and cronies, and urged all parties to prepare for the second wave of the “Dirty Over 30” campaign.

๐๐ 7. Magnitude 4.2 Earthquake Strikes Near Nyaunglaypin, Bago Region

On May 9, 2025, at approximately 7:18 AM Myanmar Standard Time, a moderate earthquake struck with a magnitude of 4.2 on the Richter scale. The quake’s epicenter was located 22 kilometers north of Nyaunglaypin Township in Bago Region, at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management.
Authorities also issued a renewed advisory urging the public to remain cautious, take preventive measures, and stay prepared, as aftershocks following the major Sagaing earthquake could still occur.
These updates were reported by Radio NUG correspondents Tharki and Ko Khant.
