๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 1. Deputy General Secretary of IUF Delivers Speech on Behalf of the NUG at the 113th International Labour Conference

At the 113th International Labour Conference currently underway in Geneva, Switzerland, Mr. Kristjan Bragason, Deputy General Secretary of the International Union of Food, Agricultural, Hotel, Restaurant, Catering, Tobacco and Allied Workers’ Associations (IUF), delivered a speech on June 10, representing the National Unity Government (NUG) of Myanmar.

In his remarks, Mr. Bragason stated that the National Unity Government was established in accordance with the Federal Democracy Charter, based on the will of the people and composed of elected parliamentarians who opposed the 2021 military coup, pro-democracy advocates, and ethnic representatives. He highlighted that since the coup in 2021, the military dictatorship in Myanmar has unleashed widespread violence, killing over 6,600 civilians and unlawfully arresting more than 29,000 people. He noted that 172 individuals have been sentenced to death and over 3.6 million have been forcibly displaced from their homes.

He also pointed out the arrests, torture, and forced exile of labour union leaders; systematic violations of workers’ fundamental rights; and the widespread use of forced labour. Under military decrees and orders, not only has democracy and freedom vanished, but a climate of fear has been deliberately cultivated across the country. Parents now live in fear that their children may be arbitrarily abducted into the military. He added that youth who refuse to serve in the military face imprisonment, torture, and even death—leaving them with no other option but to flee.

Mr. Bragason underscored that the ILO’s decision to invoke Article 33 constitutes a powerful and unequivocal message of global solidarity in defence of basic human and labour rights. He affirmed that these rights are rooted in universally respected democratic principles. He emphasized the importance of creating international mechanisms that ensure accountability for those who dismantle democracy. This call has been welcomed by people on the ground in Myanmar.

He noted that this action will open up opportunities for international monitoring and intervention when necessary. This year, a tripartite delegation from the NUG was able to attend the conference. He stressed that by next year, it will be crucial to formally recognize the NUG’s tripartite delegation as Myanmar’s official representative.

Mr. Bragason concluded by saying that now is the right moment to stand in solidarity with the people of Myanmar to safeguard justice, freedom, and dignity for all workers.
