๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 1. Myanmar Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun Urges ICC to Expedite Arrest Warrant for Min Aung Hlaing

June 26

At the 80th plenary meeting of the United Nations General Assembly held on June 25 at the UN Headquarters in New York, Myanmar's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun, called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to promptly issue an arrest warrant for junta leader Min Aung Hlaing in order to facilitate his swift apprehension.

The meeting was convened to commemorate the 20th anniversary of efforts to prevent genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing, and crimes against humanity, under the framework of the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) doctrine.

Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun stated that the grave situation in Myanmar stands as a stark example of how international commitments to R2P, international legal norms, and human rights obligations are being severely violated. He cited the UN Secretary-General's report highlighting the suffering of civilians in Myanmar due to ongoing breaches of international law, including war crimes and crimes against humanity perpetrated by the junta.

He explained that the military regime has not only dismantled the rule of law domestically, but is also systematically committing acts of violence and oppression. This, he said, is a blatant demonstration of the junta’s disregard for human lives and international law.

Referring to the application submitted by the ICC Prosecutor to the Court's Pre-Trial Chamber I in November 2024, seeking authorization for an arrest warrant against Min Aung Hlaing for his leading role in crimes against humanity and war crimes in Myanmar, the Ambassador expressed Myanmar's support. He urged the ICC to promptly issue the arrest warrant, emphasizing the need for timely international justice.

๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 2. Tribute Paid to Fallen Fighters in Phase II of Operation 1027

June 26

Dr. Soe Thurya Zaw, a member of the Central Command of the Mandalay People’s Defense Force (PDF), paid heartfelt tribute to the fallen fighters who sacrificed their lives during the second phase of Operation 1027 and to those who laid their bodies down to pave the way for the revolution.

His message was shared on social media on June 26, marking the anniversary of the second phase of Operation 1027.

“It’s been a full year since Phase II of Operation 1027. Throughout this year, countless comrades have laid down their lives, their bodies, and their strength for the revolutionary cause. I pay the deepest respect to all of them, including those wounded in the struggle,” said Dr. Soe Thurya Zaw.

He extended special gratitude to the public, stating:

“During our month-long urban combat operations, the people provided us with hot meals three times a day—an immeasurable act of generosity. Amidst the heavy rains in Myo Gyi (Moe Koke), having warm food gave us real relief. The people’s efforts to transport supplies to frontlines—even at great risk—are profoundly moving. Despite roadblocks and soaring prices, every household shared what they had—meals, coffee mix, snacks—so generously that sometimes we couldn’t even finish everything.

This is the true meaning of the phrase ‘the people and the revolution hand in hand.’ The people do not support us out of fear of the junta. They extend their helping hands out of genuine compassion from their hearts.”

June 26

The Political Prisoners Network Myanmar (PPNM) issued a statement emphasizing the urgent need for protection and humanitarian assistance for detainees who are currently enduring torture and mistreatment in prisons, military interrogation centers, and detention facilities across Myanmar.

June 26 marks the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture.

On the morning of June 12, around 200 political and other prisoners were transferred from Monywa Prison to Obo Prison in Mandalay. Upon arrival at the Obo prison entrance, nearly all the transferred inmates were brutally beaten by prison staff and police officers using rubber batons and wooden sticks.

As a result of the assault, at least 50 political prisoners sustained serious injuries including head wounds, bruises on arms and backs, and lacerations. Their fundamental right to life and security has been gravely threatened, said PPNM.
