๐ฉ๐ฉ 2. Chin Defense Force (ACDF) Vows to Continue Resistance in the Spirit of Salai Tin Maung Oo
June 26
The Asho Chin Defense Force (ACDF) has reaffirmed its commitment to continue resisting the military dictatorship, inspired by the unwavering spirit of student hero and Chin national, Salai Tin Maung Oo.
This statement was issued on June 26, marking the 49th anniversary of Salai Tin Maung Oo’s execution by hanging under the military regime.
Salai Tin Maung Oo’s resolute stance and fearless spirit against the dictatorship have become an enduring symbol of defiance, ACDF said. They pledged to carry forward his legacy with the same unyielding determination—refusing to submit or kneel to military oppression.
According to historical records, Salai Tin Maung Oo led and participated in key student-led movements: the student protests during the 1965 Southeast Asian Peninsular Games, the 1972 student demonstrations, and the 1974 U Thant Uprising.
He also served as the General Secretary of the Chin Language and Culture Committee at Yangon University. ACDF noted that he was a key advocate for officially using the honorific “Salai” (meaning brave son) for Chin men and “Mai” (meaning good daughter) for Chin women in names, reflecting their cultural identity.
Salai Tin Maung Oo was arrested on March 19, 1976, during his efforts to organize the centennial memorial of Thakin Kodaw Hmine. He was secretly executed by hanging in Insein Prison on June 26, 1976, at 4 a.m., without any prior notification to his family.
