๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 1. Kawkareik Women’s Dialogue Successfully Held to Promote Women’s Leadership and Participation

June 3

The Karen National Union (KNU) successfully organized a Women’s Dialogue in Kawkareik from May 27 to 29, aimed at enhancing women’s leadership and participation.

This event was held under the guidance of the KNU, led by its Department of Foreign Affairs, and in collaboration with the Karen Women’s Organization (KWO). Over 140 participants joined, including representatives from Karen civil society organizations, independent intellectuals, and leaders from Myanmar’s pro-democracy movement.

At the 17th KNU Congress, the Union resolved to address the pressing concerns faced by women in Kawkareik and to initiate a strategic program of interventions. This included enhancing women’s leadership across various sectors of the Kawkareik administration under KNU’s self-governed, democratic framework, and ensuring 30% women’s representation in decision-making at the next Congress. The KNU’s Department of Foreign Affairs took the lead in implementing these commitments.

The department’s first step was organizing a “Women’s Participation and Leadership in KNU Politics” dialogue. Subsequently, in October 2023, another Women’s Dialogue was held with female representatives from various departments. From June 24 to 26, 2024, a Karen Women’s Leadership Workshop was also convened. Additionally, several online workshops were conducted.

During the online phase, about 50 women leaders were selected from districts, townships, departments, and refugee camps. Following the online sessions, efforts were made to facilitate in-person meetings. In December 2024, a Women’s Consultation was held, where it was decided to organize a full-scale Women’s Dialogue. To this end, a new Working Committee was formed, leading to the recently concluded Kawkareik Women’s Dialogue. This was explained during the event by Ms. Flower, Director of the KNU’s Department of Foreign Affairs.

The objectives of the dialogue included:

  1. Strengthening the role of women in the KNU’s governance structures and public service systems.
  2. Facilitating discussion around KNU’s Constitution, gender policy drafting, women’s inclusion in the new Kawkareik government, and the broader KNU reform process.
  3. Providing space for women to actively share perspectives on their roles within the KNU.
  4. Increasing women’s participation in dialogues about the future structure and direction of the KNU.
  5. Addressing issues affecting women in Kawkareik through focused discussion.
