๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 1. NLD Political Prisoner U Myint Way Dies in Obo Prison Due to Denial of Timely Medical Treatment

July 9

U Myint Way, a political prisoner and member of the National League for Democracy (NLD), who was incarcerated at Obo Prison in Mandalay, has died after being denied timely medical care, according to a statement released today (July 9) by the Political Prisoners Network Myanmar (PPNM).

Aged 59, U Myint Way reportedly died early in the morning on July 8 from a ruptured intestine.

PPNM stated that U Myint Way had been suffering from severe abdominal pain since the first week of July and had repeatedly requested medical treatment. However, prison authorities dismissed his condition as mere indigestion and denied him proper medical attention, according to reliable sources cited by PPNM.

When his condition became critically serious, he was eventually transferred to an external hospital. However, the delay—approximately one week—resulted in his death, the statement said.

U Myint Way had been unjustly arrested by SAC-affiliated police on May 19, 2021, in Ywar Thit village, Sagaing Region. He was prosecuted at Chanmyathazi Court under Penal Code Sections 505(b), 50(a), and 61, and sentenced to a total of 19 years in prison.

Despite repeated appeals from PPNM urging prison authorities to ensure adequate healthcare and timely external hospital transfers for critically ill inmates, the prison administration has failed to take appropriate action. As a result, on average, around 25 political prisoners and detainees die each year, PPNM reported.
