๐๐ 1. Death toll from bomb strikes at Mandalay Obo Prison men’s ward rises to 21, including political prisoners
August 17
The death toll from the bombing of the men’s ward at Mandalay’s Obo Prison has reached 21, including political prisoners, according to a statement released today, August 17, by the All Burma Political Prisoners Network (PPNM).
On the morning of August 8, at around 10:00 a.m., two bombs described as “Drop Bones” struck and exploded at the men’s ward of Obo Prison in Mandalay.
As a result of the attack, 17 political prisoners and 4 other inmates were killed, bringing the total fatalities to 21. At least 10 others were injured, according to PPNM, which said it has verified the figures through its own investigations.
Because Obo Prison is under the control of the military junta, identifying the perpetrators responsible for dropping the bombs has been difficult. PPNM stated that efforts to verify accountability are ongoing and that further announcements will be made if new evidence emerges.
PPNM also noted that it has been working to document human rights violations against political prisoners inside prisons, expose the abuses, and hold perpetrators accountable.
The group emphasized that the release of the confirmed list of political prisoners who died in the bombing was only possible after careful verification by its own members.
While the identities of the deceased political prisoners have now been confirmed, information on the four other non-political inmates killed is still under investigation, PPNM added.
